Running Summary August 2024

My running was going well, but I had to stop because of a sore right Achilles tendon.

I started running again after a three-month hiatus during which I was focused on walking dogs and training for bicycle tours in May and early June.

I tried not to increase my mileage too quickly, throwing in a couple of weeks with very little running, but this failed as my right Achilles tendon grew increasingly painful. Since it was summer, many of my runs took place in high humidity, which had a good training effect but was physically tiring. I tried half mile repeats on two days. My long runs in the humidity were very difficult, and I had to cut some short. But on August 7-10 I ran on the Oregon coast, and those runs were fun and easy.

I had signed up for a half marathon in Westerly Rhode Island in early September. But my long run on Saturday, August 24, was intended to be 13 miles long, and I had to stop at 11 miles with a very sore right Achilles tendon. I decided I could not run the race.

This has happened before. After a few weeks of rest and no running, I expect I’ll start running again.
