Bicycle Tour: Cape Cod 2023, Day Five
I rode from Nickerson State Park to Wellfleet Hollow State Park. I explored Wellfleet by bicycle.
On Thursday, September 28, 2023, I rode on the Cape Cod Rail Trail from Nickerson State Park north to Wellfleet Hollow State Campground. (For the fourth day of this tour, see Cape Cod 2023, Day Four).
On my last morning at Nickerson State Park, I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise from my campsite overlooking Flax Pond.
I walked loops of Nickerson State Park from 8:15 a.m to 9:30 a.m., 3.72 miles.
I packed up and left Nickerson at 11:00 a.m., riding for 12.98 miles and ninety minutes north on the Cape Cod Rail Trail to Wellfleet Hollow State Campground. The rail trail continued past LeCount Hollow Drive to the back entrance to the state campground, which was convenient.
The ride was so short that I arrived before the 1:00 p.m. check-in time. Since no one was in my campsite, I set up my tent and then checked in.

In the afternoon, I explored the area on bicycle, riding 15.21 miles from 3:20 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. I found how to cross over U.S. Route 6 on Long Pond Road.
The intersection of U.S. Route 6 at Main Street in Wellfleet has no pedestrian or bicycle access. This is unfortunately typical of roads built on the Cape.

There were signs of widespread beach erosion at Cahoon Hollow Beach. I predict that within a few years the Beachcomber Restaurant there will be swallowed by the ocean.
From 6:30 p.m. to 6:50 p.m., I walked campground loops for 0.95 miles. The park is small, and there were maybe five other occupied campsites.
