Bicycle Tour: Cape Cod 2025, Day Two

I rode the Provinceland bike trails north of Provincetown.

Thursday, September 4, 2025, was the second day of my tour of Cape Cod. (For the first day of this tour, see Cape Cod 2025, Day One). I was camping at North of Highland Camping Area for the second day.

I slept six hours, waking at 6:00 a.m. My air mattress was leaking air because I hadn’t closed the valve completely. I read from Les Miserables by Victor Hugo on my Kindle while I was awake in the middle of the night.

Dawn was sunny with a few clouds. I charged my phone and watch using a power bank, and then I took the power bank over to the campground’s recreation hall for charging. I turned off my Garmin inReach Messenger since I had a strong cell phone signal.

I walked southwest from the campground on Head of the Meadow Road to Salty’s Market in North Truro on Route 6A.

Salty Market is an upscale deli and market where the employees are very friendly and helpful. I bought a sandwich, some bagels, and fruit.

Forty-three units of new housing were under construction just east of Route 6 on Highland Road. There is a severe shortage of affordable housing on Cape Cod since much of the housing stock has been purchased by investors for short-term rentals. Some new housing is being built to attract workers.

I walked back to the campground taking a longer route on Highland Road, Coast Guard Road, and the Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail Connector. The roads were typical Cape Cod roads with no sidewalks or bicycle lanes. I find the Cape annoyingly automobile-oriented.

While walking along Coast Guard Road, I photographed a gargoyle and a robot at the driveway entrances of very expensive homes. (Those are turkeys in the back of the driveway behind the gargoyle.)

Starting at 11:15 a.m. I bicycled to Provincetown, where I rode all of the Provincelands bike trails, returning to the campground at 3:35 p.m. The Provinceland bike trails pass through the dunes to the ocean. Some of the hills on the bike trails are too steep to ride up unless you build up a lot of momentum. I rode 28.87 total miles, all of the distance in Zone 1 or Zone 2. I was pretty tired when I finished.

I took a shower and relaxed at my campsite. In the early evening, after dinner, I walked around the campground loops to stretch my legs.
