Bicycle Tour: Massasoit State Park, Day Two

On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, I camped and did a lot of walking at Massasoit State Park. (For the first day of this three-day tour, see Massasoit State Park, Day One.)

I woke up at 6:00. After I ran 3 miles on the campground roads, I discovered that animals had gotten into my food during the night, eating my cookies, Clif Bars, and granola-muesli mix. They spoiled my cocoa and espresso powder. I needed to buy a bear canister.

I ate wheat crackers, peanut butter, string cheese, Gatorade, and an apple for breakfast. I put my remaining crackers, cheese, and bars into my cooking kit for protection.

To buy more food, I walked nearly four miles to the Circle K market on U.S. Route 44 near Interstate 495. Traffic was heavy and fast in Route 44. The Circle K has a Dunkin’ inside. There was actually very little real food in the store.

I enjoyed the walk, but the roads were not designed for pedestrians. Businesses along the rural roads included eggs, firewood, flowers, and mosquito control. Some people were driving giant pickup trucks on the local toads. All drivers were speeding despite signs imploring drivers to slow down. Trash along the roads included nip bottles, beer cans, and fast food containers and wrappers. Many Americans don’t love their country.

In the campground, I found a Park Tool repair stand behind the entrance booth.

I walked a few miles of beautiful park trails near Lake Rico, Kings Pond, and Big Bearhole Pond.

Later I rode the park roads for 3.75 miles to stretch my bicycling muscles. There were some very noisy people camping here and a few cigarette smokers. I discovered that the A and B loops were for trailers; it was like a city over there. I don’t normally go camping during the busy summer season.
