In April, 2026, Carriage House Violins released a YouTube video in which Zlatomir Fung, an artist in residence, demonstrates fundamental cello bow strokes.
The strokes Zlatomir demonstrates include:
- Legato
- Portato
- Détaché
- Staccato
- Ricochet
- Spiccato
- Sautillé
- Tremolo
- Martelé
The video provides an excellent demonstration of each of these bow strokes. Zlatomir is an articulate speaker who teaches well.
Détaché is the only stroke I know as a beginning cellist. Zlatomir says, “détaché is the default stroke we use when we play separate bows.” My teacher, Ana Ospina, is introducing me to the legato stroke, about which Zlatomir says, “legato is one of the hardest strokes to execute very well on the cello.”
Zlatomir is playing many concerts in the 2026–2027 season, and he is a member of the faculty at Juilliard.
