Danny Sea at Luthier Collective

I went to a show by contemporary cellist Danny Sea at Luthier Collective.

Last night (June 25, 2026), I went to a show by contemporary cellist Danny Sea at Luthier Collective here in Somerville.

Danny is a cellist and bassist, and a composer, arranger, and orchestrator who graduated from Berklee in 2024; Danny is about to move to Nashville, Tennessee.

Danny was accompanied by Sam Vittetoe on double bass and flute and by Jason Ji on guitar.

Danny played a mix of tunes influenced by bluegrass and folk rock, including several he composed. One very nice song, “Drops,” inspired by his father, was recently released on BandCamp and music streaming services.

Danny played his mandocello for this tune. A mandocello is an instrument from the mandolin family that is tuned in fifths like a cello (C2, G2, D3, and A3). Danny said his mandocello was converted from a Fender acoustic guitar. You can see what Danny’s mandocello looks like in the photo that accompanies the track on Bandcamp.

That was a good show and a lot of fun.
